In a new effort to positively impact the lives of youth, aiming to be on the cutting edge of a new and exciting event, Volunteers for Youth in Claremore is teaming up with the Tulsa’s Shock WNBA team to present the iExpo. This innovative event will be hosted in the Tulsa BOK Center and will take place on Friday, June 15, 2012 from 1:00 pm to approximately 10:00 pm. Admission includes the evening’s WNBA basketball game between the Tulsa Shock and the Seattle Storm!

The first area event of its kind, the iExpo is specifically geared toward teen girls, age 12 to 20 years, old and all area teenage girls are encouraged to be a part of this ground-braking event! iExpo admission is $10 per person (includes the evening basketball game admission).

With the iExpo motto “Our Girls, Our Future” in mind, positive messages will be woven throughout the event. Focuses will include self-esteem and self-image, dating and dating violence, self-defense, and remaining free of substance abuse. Workshops will include opportunities for girls to ask questions and get information. Presenters for this exciting event include:
• Self Defense: Officer’s Robin Blair and Danny Dobbins of the Claremore Police Department
• Dating Violence: Catherine Heimdale, author/speaker, of Triangle Rock Enterprises (Claremore, OK)
o Claremore’s Safenet Services will also be present for questions and information in conjunction with the dating violence presentation.
• Fashion by Cato: Alyson Short of Volunteers for Youth (Claremore, OK)
• Shock Time: Tulsa Shock WNBA
Special bus transportation to and from Claremore is being provided by the Tulsa Shock WNBA for any Rogers County area teenage girls wishing to attend the event. This transportation is included with iExpo admission at no additional charge.

Bixby BBQ n’ Blues Grand Champion

Donny Teel of Buffalo’s BBQ in Sperry won the title of grand champion at the state’s biggest barbecue cook-off on Saturday.

Teel, who also holds the title of world champion, won the Bixby cook-off last year.

This year, he was up against 93 other teams from across the country.

Some Say that Oklahoma Should Plan Financially for Disaster

Oklahoma needs to plan for rainy days – and the tornadic, icy and drought-ravaged ones as well, city and state emergency management leaders say.

For years, Oklahoma’s Emergency Fund has built up a mounting pile of unpaid bills, leaving local government agencies holding the bag – sometimes for millions of dollars.

The emergency fund is used to pay one-eighth of certain government costs for dealing with disasters that have federal approval for assistance. The federal government picks up 75 percent of the cost.

But during recent tough economic years, which coincided with a lot of costly disasters, the Oklahoma Legislature didn’t appropriate enough money to pay off the state’s share. So local government agencies – including cities, towns, counties, public utilities and rural water districts – just had to wait for their reimbursements.

After prodding by Gov. Mary Fallin, the Legislature approved a $34.1 million supplemental appropriation earlier this year, which was enough to pay off all the bills, some of which went all the way back to 2007.

But Bixby City Manager Doug Enevoldsen says the Legislature should be doing more. The state should be thinking ahead because another disaster will occur sooner or later.
